HMS Derwent was a Royal Naval destroyer and part of the First Destroyer Flotilla stationed at Portsmouth. She was equipped with depth charges for use in anti-submarine patrols, escorting merchant ships and defending the Dover Barrage. On 2nd May, 1917 she hit a mine laid by the German submarine, UC-26 when off the coast near Le Havre in France and sank with the loss of 58 lives. One of these was Thomas Disbrey.
